Celebrating 36 Years
Buddy & Wanda’s Since 1972
Serving the Houston Area
It all began in 1972 in Seabrook, Tx., when the dry cleaning store that Wanda Steel was managing closed and she decided to go into business for herself. She opened “Wanda’s of Seabrook” a place for custom drapes and such. That first year she sold only $16K in drapes, but folks liked her and the business doubled the second year. By the third year it doubled again, that’s when her husband Buddy decided to leave the insurance business and get more involved. They added on to the building and incorporated as Home Decorating Inc. By 1979 the business reached over $400K in revenue. In 1981 they opened another store in Nassau Bay, calling it Wanda’s Paint & Paper. Their son John managed that location.
When hurricane Alicia hit in 1983 the storm forced them to close the original Seabrook store and consolidate all operations into Nassau Bay. Then, in 1987, they were about to move into a new location at the Nassau Bay Shopping Center when the “great fire” struck and all was lost. From the ashes came a blessing when the space next to their new storefront would not rebuild and they expanded even more. By 1990 the annual revenue reached nearly $1million. Then, in 1991 Buddy had the foresight to be the second member to join Carpetmax, a ground floor idea to unite quality flooring dealers thru a national affiliation to raise the level of professionalism in the industry and bring outstanding value to their customers.
In 1992, their oldest son and his business manager closed up a business in Florida and moved their families to Texas to become part of the family business. As the business continued to grow, Buddy & Wanda’s younger son, a CPA, saw it’s potential and he too joined the family corporation. By 1995, after many struggles and successes, they moved into their new 11,000 sq.ft. Store in Webster/ Bay Area Houston. In 1997 their son John passed away. He is missed dearly.
In 1998 they became a “Full Service” flooring dealer with the addition of the MaxCARE department, which offers professional carpet “steam” cleaning, tile/grout “steam” cleaning, dust free wood floor refinishing, carpet repairs/restreching, and various other floorcare & repair services. In 1999, they were awarded “Member of the Year” for the CarpetMax co-op at the national convention in Las Vegas. Since then, the CarpetMax group became FlooringAMERICA and has transitioned into a part of the largest floorcovering dealer network in the world.
Buddy & Wanda’s FlooringAMERICA has become the largest full service flooring store in this area, providing their clients with all the benefits of a national company and the “down home” service of a family business. In January of 2004 Buddy and Wanda transitioned the business to their son Scott who has been the President for the last several years and Mike Furin the Vice President. And as they say; “The Rest is History”.
Buddy & Wanda are now enjoying retirement. In June of 2004 Scott and Mike opened their second showroom in the Missouri City/ Sugar Land market with a 5400 sq. ft. location on Hwy 6 by Wal-Mart / across from Kohl’s.
Today, My Flooring AMERICA has become a full service (one stop) flooring dealership, topping $9 million in annual revenue with the focus on service & growth. Recently, Chris Hussey joined them as Operatons Director & Kelly Ferree has joined them as Director of Sales to help with their growth and continued 5 star services. They will be opening their 3rd location in Katy @ 1025 S. Mason Rd. by April of this year. Buddy, as Chairman of the Board, is still involved. He is mentoring Scott as president and Mike Furin as vice president, as the 2 of them, along with a great management team and staff, run the day to day operations of the company.
And now they are changing their local company’s name to My Flooring AMERICA because “we want to personalize our business to reflect who we really are and to invite everyone to come to My Flooring AMERICA - “It’s Different here!" They want to let folks know that they will receive personal local quality service because they “make the difference thru their people and their 5 points of difference guarentee” that’s why they added the “My” to now become, My Flooring AMERICA and this refelcts the best of both worlds, local and national.
Their Mission is to provide their customers an outstanding service level they cannot obtain from any other flooring company through their people, their values and their purpose. Their core values of Christian Principals, Integrity, Professionalism, Customer Focus, Can-Do attitude, Constantly Improving, Team work & Caring are the guidelines by which they do their best to operate all aspects of the business. Giving back to the communities & others when possible is also a very important component of their goals & success.
